Humansdorp Kooperasie

The Humansdorp Co-operative is an agricultural co-operative, based in Humansdorp, South Africa and was established in 1944. Its Head Office is located adjacent to Jeffreys Bay and approximately 90km from Port Elizabeth, and has been referred to as The Co-Op since 2013 when its trademark was registered accordingly. Originally created as a milling company to support local grain farmers, its members unanimously decided to convert the company to The Humansdorp Co-operative Ltd in 1961. It has since developed to provide support to dairy, citrus, deciduous fruit, livestock and grain farmers throughout South Africa and is one of the biggest suppliers to agriculture in the country. There are 30 commercial branches and 13 specialised depots in SA. The Co-op employs almost 1 000 employees permanently, and 100 temporary or contractual staff. Currently on a BEE Level 6, the co-operative is owned by 1 400 members or shareholders and a Board of Directors oversee its daily operations. Subsidiaries include VGK Firearms (Parow), Kareedouw Kreosoot Werke (Edms) Beperk which is a pole treatment facility, Umtiza Farmers' Corporation (East London); PSP Investments (Kokstad) and Komkyk Motors near Touws River, Western Cape. The Co-op employs expert technical staff, including agronomists, agricultural economists and irrigation technicians. These expert services, as well as veterinarian services, are also made available to emerging farmers to enhance the production capacity of their businesses. The Co-op is operated according to sound economic principles. Their innovative and outstanding customer service, with the main purpose of ensuring the profitability of the business, as well as the long term sustainability of producers, is well-known. In conjunction with Land Bank and the South African Government, The Co-op offers finance to emerging farmers. Whilst the funds are provided through governmental channels, The Co-op is responsible for: the assessment of applications; administering of facilities and credit control; and the bearing of risks relating to the loans. The Co-op furthermore provides farmers with project management and planning support, as well as financial training to impart the necessary business acumen required to be profitable and sustainable. The areas served include the Tsitsikamma, which is the mecca of dairy producers in South Africa, the Sundays River Valley, Fish River Valley, Gamtoos Valley, Langkloof, East London, Port Elizabeth, Bathurst, Umtata, Queenstown, Humansdorp and Kareedouw.
