Operations Manager

JOB SUMMARY:

To manufacture and distribute Poultry Feed to the Gauteng Operations in accordance with the required quality and specifications. Systems implemented must ensure that feed produced support the farmers to achieve the Poultry KPI’s of the region. Production and delivery costs must drive down input costs of the region.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Operational and Cost requirements

  • Continuously apply recognized Good Manufacturing Practices for all feed milling and related operations
  • Manage feed production costs within budget constraints
  • Achieve targeted Feed Conversion and target live mass for poultry
  • Maintain milling losses to less than 0.3% of total production
  • Control raw material and feed wastage to less than 15 tons/month
  • Manage outsourced feed transport contract as per the Service Level Agreement (SLA)
  • Ensure that raw material stock levels do not drop below critical stocks
  • Ensure that no chickens stand without feed
  • Continuously improve plant OEE based on equipment availability and utilization and feed quality

 

Feed Production and Quality

  • Consistently produce and deliver quality feed to the required specifications as ordered, by ensuring that:
    1. Raw materials are correctly stored and reclaimed without damage or contamination
    2. Ground raw materials are produced to the correct specification
    3. Raw materials are correctly batched and mixed to set formulations
    4. Pelleting temperature are maintained above 75’C
    5. Pellet durability exceeds 94% as per tumbler test
    6. Sieved crumbles exceeds 80% above the screen
    7. The moisture balance between formulated raw materials and finished feed is maintained
  • Manage the Feed Formulation System to ensure that only the latest approved formulas are produced
  • Manage production planning and plant capacity to meet orders
  • Ensure that feed is produced and delivered in the correct sequence, from youngest to oldest animals
  • Manage feedmill hygiene to eliminate cross-contamination and biological hazards
  • Empty, clean and disinfect all raw material and feed bins and silos at least once every 3 months to reconcile stock and reduce feed risks
  • Maintain an effective Non-Conformance Report system and Feed Return system

 

Repairs and Maintenance and Utilities

  • Implement and maintain a preventative maintenance program for all feed milling plant, equipment, buildings and site
  • Maintain unplanned plant downtime to less than 5% of planned time per month, including process control
  • Manage repairs and maintenance costs within budget constraints
  • Ensure adequate maintenance resources, tools and equipment are available and maintained
  • Formally address all plant and equipment breakdowns, maintenance call outs and rework
  • Manage outside contractors and project work
  • Research and implement means to reduce utilities consumption for feed production
  • Review and report on utilities bills monthly

 

Legal requirements and Biological Risk Control

  • Ensure that feedmill and related activities comply with legislated health, safety and environmental Acts, regulations and standards
  • Ensure that statutory inspections are performed as legislated and records maintained
  • Ensure that statutory appointments are up to date and training requirements are complied with
  • Ensure that feedmilling and related equipment is maintained and operated as per the requirements of the OHSAct
  • Comply with legislation related to compound animal feed production and distribution
  • Enforce Biological Risk Controls on site and during deliveries according to Standard Operating Procedures
  • Manage housekeeping standards through continuous improvement
  • Apply effective rodent and pest control on the premises

 

People

  • Maintain a highly motivated and effective team to operate the feedmill safely at the lowest cost
  • Ensure continuous training of personnel to achieve high levels of multi-skilling
  • Ensure that PPE is effective, used correctly and is well maintained
  • Maintain staff discipline and apply disciplinary and grievance procedures where required
  • Maintain staff facilities and hygiene
  • Ensure annual medical surveillance is complied with for staff exposed to dust and noise

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

A minimum of a 3 year post matric qualification in food/feed production, such as technical qualification with suitable experience, or a Degree/Diploma/Certificate in animal poultry sciences with production experience. A qualification in Compound Animal Feed Production from a recognized feed milling institution would be advantageous.

 

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of 5 years hands on experience in compound animal feed production, of which 3 continuous years should be in a management position, combined with related plant maintenance experience. The incumbent must have a proven track record of driving efficiencies to improve production output, whilst controlling costs.
